Project Navigation
v4.3 onwards
Projects are a central part of IriusRisk because that’s where the threat modeling happens. So it is essential that project creation and management is intuitive yet powerful. Release 4.3 brings with it a major improvement to how you navigate projects:
-
A simplified and intuitive navigation designed to get you where you need to be faster
-
Visual indicators that guide the eye so you can see key information at a glance
-
Better use of screen space so you have access to more information
This article describes the key differences between the previous navigation and the improvements introduced in IriusRisk 4.3.
Old navigation
Before we look at the improvements, it will help to orientate ourselves around the old navigation. The two screenshots below show the Projects view and a specific project.
The sections show above in red are as follows:
-
A - Top level projects navigation including a drop-down of projects, workflow, lock threat model, projects list, architecture tab, threats tab, countermeasures tab, new project creation, and bulk actions.
-
B - Shows the list of projects as well as search based filtering.
-
C - The section navigation for the select project.
-
D - The selected tab (e.g. project details, project threats, ownership etc.) as well as the risk summary
-
E - Diagram, artefacts, and notifications under the Architecture tab
-
F - The main screen used for diagramming, threats list, countermeasures list etc.
The much improved navigation
The three screenshots below shown the new layout and navigation.
The sections shown above in red are as follows:
-
Q - New Project button, and project actions including import project. This replaces the non-navigation elements of section A in the old layout.
-
R - The list of projects as well as filtering as per section B.
-
S - A new thumbnail view of the threat model and project name to quickly provide recognition and context when working outside of the diagram. Clicking on this takes you to the project home page. This loosely corresponds to the project drop-down in section A for the selected threat model.
-
T - Threat model navigation, giving you quick access to the core elements of a threat model including the diagram, threats, countermeasures, artefacts, and notification. This is a combination of sections A and E in the old layout.
-
U - Provides more information about the project such as ownership, reports and project component. This corresponds to section C.
-
V - A new button to collapse the full left menu and just show the icons, giving you more space to work with.
-
W - Project overview and actions. It includes the project name, risk metrics, update status and button, lock threat model button, workflow, and actions. This corresponds to some elements of section A, D, and the actions for a project in section B. A key thing to note here is that the “Update threat model” button is now always available, and not just when looking at the diagram.
-
X - The main section of the project home page including a view of the diagram and risk charts. Clicking on the diagram takes you straight to the diagram editing. The previous layout didn’t provide a preview of the diagram, but the risk overview loosely correspond to section D.
-
Y - Project overview and actions when you’re in the threat model (diagram, threats, countermeasures etc). This includes the same actions as section W but without the risk metrics.
-
Z - The main project content including diagram, threats, countermeasures, and anything that is being worked on.
