Introduction
In IriusRisk, assets and tags on components and dataflows provide a powerful way to add metadata to your threat models. This metadata can be used for a variety of purposes, such as tracking deployment status or versioning, assigning unique identifiers, specifying protocols, and identifying types of data transferred.
While tags and assets are valuable for adding context to your threat models, a large number of them can visually clutter your diagrams, making them difficult to read and understand. To address this issue, IriusRisk offers the option to condense labels for assets and tags. This means that the labels remain in view but take up less space, making your diagrams more visually appealing and easier to interpret.
Enabling Condensed Labels
To enable condensed labels for your threat model diagrams, follow these steps:
- Open your threat model diagram in IriusRisk.
- In the diagramming context menu on the right, locate the "Use condensed labels" checkbox and check it.
Once you have checked the checkbox, your diagram will be updated to display condensed labels for assets and tags. This will significantly reduce the visual clutter and make your diagram easier to read.

After enabling condensed labels, the diagram will appear more streamlined:
Global Settings for Enhanced Efficiency
To streamline the threat modeling process even further, a global setting is also included. This setting allows you to enable condensed labels for all artifacts generated, ensuring consistency and efficiency throughout the threat modeling experience.
To enable the Global Setting, follow these steps:
- From the home page, open the settings by clicking on the 'gear' icon, then 'settings'
- Navigate to the 'User Interface' section where you can check the 'Diagram preview - Use condensed labels' option
Conclusion
Condensed labels provide a practical solution for those managing threat models with an extensive use of tags. By condensing labels, you can strike a balance between information richness and visual simplicity, resulting in a more effective and user-friendly threat modeling experience. The global setting enhances this feature's utility by extending its benefits to all artifacts generated within the platform.
